Names, it’s how we are known and identified. Names or at least the surname origin carry meaning, descriptions, the root of where it began. The beginning of who you are.
Social scientist believe that names produce a Dorian Gray effect, influencing personality, how we’re perceived and even physical appearance. “When internal factors such as personality influence external facial appearance this has been termed “the Dorian Gray effect”
Often times names have a certain sound or feel: Ezekial or Zeke for short… definitely conjures the picture of a strong male, it’s Hebrew origin means; “God will strengthen” OR … here’s an example of something a bit more modern how about: Ryker…in Danish means “Super Strong”. These names produce a strong viral male picture…as opposed to: Conner this name has a gentler feel – it’s meaning is “Friend to Everyone”, OR … Paul, A Disciplined Fellow…These names bring a softer male image…safe!
Girls names are a lot more fun: Abigail (Abby) – “A Fathers Joy”, Isabelle–“God is my strength, devoted to God”, Nora-“Shinning Light”, Sophia-“Wisdom” and Zoe-“Life” … We can also associate names by characters in the books we read, movies we watch, the stars who play the roles, stars or sports figures themselves, people you went to school with or work with…you know that battle when trying to pick out a name for your unborn. Yikes!!!
BUT… There is a name above all names and that name is Jesus…The name Jesus is derived from the Hebrew name Yeshua, which is based on the semitic root, meaning “to deliver, to rescue”
Isaiah 9:6 NLT “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”…
Phillipians 2:9-11 NLT “Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, In Heaven, and On Earth, and Under the Earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
In prayer when praying in “The Name of Jesus Christ” there is abundant power…however calling upon Him in prayer is not a magic amulet that will ensure you get what you are praying for but moreover it’s telling our Lord that we are laying down our personal desires and our way of getting things done. By a prayer honoring “in his name I pray” we commit to follow God, his way, his time and upon doing so bring honor to him.”
Luke 22:42 NIV “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” This is the prayer Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane before he was arrested and crucified. So, if Jesus our Lord can pray the prayer of not my will Lord but yours, maybe we should too because he wants nothing but the best for you and me.
